How to Test the Aptitude of Your Puppy

If you decide to test your pup, take them to a secluded area away from the rest of the litter. Try and see whether your dog is full of fear, or whether they are very energetic. It will probably be good to choose a dog that falls somewhere in the middle – a puppy that is playful but not hyperactive.

By testing the level of dominance in your puppy you will be able to avoid an excessively aggressive dog later on. Bend down and softly roll the puppy onto its back and hold him down with your hands. Try and see whether the puppy struggles to get loose, or whether they are just freezing in terror. If it is domineering, they will probably struggle and a puppy that is shy will just freeze.

In order to see how sociable your puppy is, you should put them down so that they face you. Then take a few steps away from the puppy and then call them. You may need to persuade them a little, and you can do this by bending down and opening your arms. A little hesitation is fine, but in the end you want the puppy to respond to you. If he is nipping, it is probably an indication that they are bossy.

In order to effectively train and communicate with your puppy, they have to react to affection. Praising and petting your puppy is an integral part in your relationship with your dog. Caress the puppy and talk to them affectionately. While busy with this exercise you should not hold the dog, but let them decide whether they want to stay with you or not. See whether the puppy walks away and wants nothing to do with you, or do the shiver with fear. If your puppy gladly stays with you, they are probably very affectionate and that is what you want. This will help in making the training process of your puppy easier. It is tough to resist a charming little puppy, but allow yourself to think with your head and not your heart.

It is best to take every step to guarantee that you and your new puppy will be able to set up a good relationship before you bring them home.
