PUBLIC AFFAIRS MANAGER


DESCRIPTION     Level: L4

Reports to: Corporate Relations Director

CONTEXT

Guinness Nigeria currently operates on 3 sites within Nigeria with a portfolio of products including Stout, Malta, Lager and Ready to drink products and is the 2nd largest Guinness market globally producing and selling approximately 4.5ml hl per annum. It is quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange and a significant player in the national economy.

We are looking to fill the role of Public Affairs Manager. The role is expected to help the organization navigate complex public policy issues and communicate the company’s point of view to key stakeholder groups, including policymakers, legislators, regulators and other external stakeholders. The role holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management and execution of a variety of strategic public affairs and issues management programmes designed to help the company promoteand protect its corporate reputation and creating an enabling environment for the achievement of the corporate goals of the business.


ROLE AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Drive the creation of a more predictable and balanced tax environment that engenders business growth.

Monitor the legislative and regulatory environments to identify issues and trends that may impact the industry and gain favorable public policy support through coalition and grass roots building, working in cooperation with other local and regional Policy and Public Affairs and communications leaders.

Champion the building of outstanding relationships with key government stakeholders to achieve amazing outcomes with each of the stakeholder groups.

Maintain radar on the tax and regulatory environment to alert the business on new and emerging developments that could impact the company’s operations.

Provide leadership, consultancy, and support to the business on the development and delivery of responsible drinking programmes to promote positive perception of beverage alcohol by critical stakeholders.

Draft position papers, messaging and related materials related to legislative and regulatory issues/developments to provide a consistent framework for communications and direct the advocacy efforts of the business including direct lobbying, grassroots lobbying and advocacy, and digital advocacy influencing of federal, state and local decision-makers.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED


Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s Degree preferred.

Between 10 to 15 years progressive advocacy experience in public policy-oriented government affairs, communications, journalism, or government service.

Minimum of five years of line management experience

Background in public policy, legislative affairs or equivalent experience with demonstrated public speaking and communication ability. Experience in advocacy volunteer cultivation and management.

Superior spoken and written communications and editing skills

Track-record in communicating with diverse policy audiences and elected officials

Expert knowledge of government structures, agencies and policies which impact the business at all levels in Nigeria and deep contacts in the policy community.

Ability to manage multiple tasks under strict deadlines.

Ability to cultivate and maintain strong relationships

Experience working collaboratively across complex teams to articulate project goals, issues and timelines

Strong planning, execution, and process management skills

Excellent computer skills especially with MS Word packages

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED


Graduate with 5-6 years minimum commercial expertise gained across Consumer Marketing and / or Sales Management. A strong track record in Sales at a management level, with experience in at least two areas of Sales. Particularly critical is previous experience of Field Sales or other customer facing roles.

Strong leadership and communication skills –written and verbal

A good understanding of all Diageo Way of Selling Capabilities and tools and how these interact together to deliver brilliant execution in Field Sales. Strong capability and able to coach others in the Execution Standards, Managing Relationships (including negotiation skills), Sales Force Effectiveness, Outlet Segmentation, JBP, JUBP and Targeted Trade Investment. These roles are particularly important in championing the Responsible Drinking agenda through the Field

Previous experience of leading / managing others, delivering results through teams and strong track record as a coach. Experience of change management is particularly advantageous.

HR ADMINISTRATOR – MAINSTREAM SPIRITS


ROLE AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Role model the HR Model and “push” HR queries to the appropriate channels. Provide training and occasional support to employees and line managers on the new HR systems, processes and embeds the new roles and responsibilities. Important to act as a trainer and not as a doer of transactional activities for Line Managers or HR BPs.

Takes ownership for and resolves any complex, market specific queries referred to them that require either detailed market knowledge or a face to face intervention.

Responsible for the delivery of the following:

Employee On- boarding – ensuring that all documentation for new hires has been satisfactorily completed and captured.

Benefit enrolment – ensure that all new hire’s have been enrolled in the appropriate benefit programmes.

Reporting – maintain contact with local vendors / government agencies to receive and administer reports or statutory documentation.

Employee Correspondence – Prints and distributes letters and other correspondence developed in first point SSC but requiring local printing.

Employee file Management – own the creation of and on-going maintenance of locally held hard copy employee files and maintenance of soft copy files in the document management system.

Payroll (where appropriate) – provide Workday reports to Payroll and coordinate non Workday payroll data (e.g. Overtime) to provide to Payroll.

Market HR Reporting – Runs market or business unit reports from Workday (Eg Headcount, Absence) and provides to HRBP / HRD for business performance meetings.

Exits: Local or face to face support to Line managers or HRBPs for Exit processes (e.g. collection of equipment etc.)

Local Non Workday related Employee Lifecycle processes – There will be market specific processes that are not completed in Workday, these will vary by market. The in-market first point team will be expected to deliver these.

Works seamlessly with the first point Africa SSC to ensure consistency of service to HR, Employees and Line managers.

Guinness Graduate Skills Development Scholarship 2015/2016


This scholarship will provide full tuition for Engineering graduates (from Guinness Nigeria’s host communities) to enroll for the 2015/2016 one year NAPTIN Graduate Skills Development Programme (NGSDP). This intensive programme equips graduates with the technical skills they need to build successful careers in the Nigerian Power Sector.


By offering this scholarship, Guinness Nigeria seeks to play a part in developing Nigeria’s power sector while fostering youth development in its host communities.


Graduates of Electrical/Electronic and Mechanical Engineering from the following communities are therefore encouraged to apply:

This role, based in Nigeria, plays an integral role in our performance by acting as an ambassador for the Reserve (luxury) portfolio.


Purpose
The role will work primarily in the 4 & 5 star segments of the Nigerian On trade Channel. While there is no direct people management responsibility, the Reserve Brands Ambassador will work very closely with the Marketing and Sales teams in the On Trade channel, in order to achieve targets.


Accountabilities of Role:





Sales:


  • Develop and implement appropriate sales strategies for each individual account working with the Divisional sales manager/Regional sales manager.

  • Achieve targeted profits, volume targets, and customer service levels as outlined and agreed to in the business plans.

  • Work along with the Regional sales managers to ensure adequate distribution of the brands.

  • Inform the account of all new product launches in a timely manner and work actively towards maximizing product listings in the outlets.


Brand Building activity


  • Together with the Marketing Manager and the Sales team, assess the market to identify and action opportunities to present the luxury brand portfolio in the best possible way which would maximise brand strength and sales volume.

  • Implement the trade marketing plans for these brands using specific POS material.

  • Ensure all activities and events contribute to building brand equity and reinforce the positioning of the brand both within the brand portfolio and in the customer/consumer mind set.


Customer Relationship Management


  • Build strong relationships with the Food & Beverage Mangers of the specified accounts.

  • Regularly visit customers and key influencers with a clear agenda and desired outcome – to enhance brand awareness, build brand equity, distribution, sales and profitability.

  • Be acknowledged in the trade as a leading authority in spirits luxury brands.


Training


  • Provide specialist knowledge through regular training on luxury brands regularly to Customers.

  • Ensure that his own professional knowledge is continuously updated.


Tactical Activities


  • Collect information for category/ brand performance in the Accounts and analyze the brand movements and complete sales analysis for the brands.

  • Identify outlets with growth opportunity and design trade programs to increase share and volumes.

  • Work as a spirits consultant to the RSMs as well as to the F&B Manager/ Account.


Others


  • Identify development opportunities to build the capability of Diageo Brands Nigeria staff associated with the brand.

  • Ensure that all customer activities undertaken are in compliance with the law of the land as well as in accordance with company policies and procedures.


Qualifications and Experience:


  • BSc./HND Degree holder, Commercial qualification ideal/preferable

  • 2- 5 years of experience in direct Sales / Food & Beverage Sales preferably in 5 star hotels/ luxury boutique hotels.

  • Should be extremely fluent in written and spoken English; knowledge of a Continental language will be advantageous.

  • Excellent understanding and knowledge of spirits.

  • Passion for and identification with luxury brands as a category.

  • Ability to be the spokesperson for the luxury brands: should be able to “reflect the luxury

  • In-depth understanding of the on-trade customers and industry practices.

OUR REQUIREMENTS AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS

A minimum Bachelor 2.1 academic degree or upper credit HND in a business related field
May have some experience – preferably in public relations, marketing or project management
Fluency in English
